YOUR Sedgley Councillors

Yours truly is 53, I’ve lived in Prestwich for 28yrs, I’m originally from New Moston, Manchester. I work as a skilled aircraft fitter at BAE Systems Samlesbury site (near Preston), currently working on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. I worked for 19 years at BAE’s Chadderton plant but had to relocate and re train when “Chadd” shut. I’m actually a time served sheet metal worker or “tin basher” as they say in engineering. During my 27 years at BAE I’ve worked on the Advanced Turbo-Prop, 146 Regional Jet, Nimrod, Harrier, Tornado, Typhoon, Hawk, Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. At BAE I’m a shop steward as well as a safety officer and have been given recycling, energy and environment portfolios by the management there. It’s been good to use my recycling experience as a member of the Greater Manchester Waste and Disposal Authority to promote recycling at work and gain several successes.
After leaving North Manchester High in 1976 I struggled to get a job and ended up at Openshaw Technical College on a government training scheme, a year later I applied for and got an apprenticeship at CWS Engineers in Cheetham Hill, where I worked until leaving for BAE in 1986.
I’m married to Debbie; we have four kids, James, Eleanor, Izzy and Gabriel and have resided at Quinn towers on Whittaker Lane since 1987. What I love about Prestwich is its sense of identity and independence and the amount of green space around us. To this extent as well as being a councillor I’m a member of the Prestwich carnival committee, I actively support the Prestwich Festival (normally putting on a poetry night). I’m a governor at both Parrenthorn and Park View schools, (all of my children attended both schools and I’ve wanted to stay involved with both schools as my kids have received a great education). I’m also a local magistrate, serving on the bench since 2004. My interests beside politics are listening to music, mostly rock and heavy metal and football. I follow FC United of Manchester and I’m involved helping them out when I can spare the time.

I was brought up in Salford and moved to Prestwich with my parents over 25 years ago. I now live in Prestwich with my partner Jordan and he supports me in so much of what I do.
I am a partner in a firm of solicitors in Whitefield called Berry & Berry Law. I appear as an advocate in court cases including appearing in the Crown Court and the Court of Appeal.
I have been involved in the Labour Party on and off for many years but more recently decided that I would get directly involved in local politics and was elected as a councillor for Sedgley ward in 2010. I serve on the Over view and Scrutiny Committee as well as the Teachers consultative committee. I am also the Chair of The Labour Group on the Council which can be challenging at times.
Jordan and I run a cub scout pack in Salford which is great fun if sometimes a little noisy at. We love going camping either with the kids or on our own.
In my remaining spare time I like to cook and eat out often with friends. Jordan and I go and see Salford Reds Rugby League team and are hoping for great things in the future.
