Ivan Lewis visited BAE System’s Samlesbury site with Sedgley Ward Councillor & BAE Fitter Alan Quinn. Ivan took a look at the production line for the Typhoon and F35 Joint Strike Fighter followed by a meeting with staff.
Cllr Alan Quinn said “I was delighted that Ivan accepted the joint invitation from the BAE Systems Management and Unite the Union to visit Samlesbury. BAE are a great example of what can be achieved in this country with proper investment in a highly skilled workforce who are well respected and treated by their employer.”
Ivan Lewis said “BAE has a great operation in Samlesbury and its great to see a British based company producing such high quality, high tech equipment.
Trade Unions have received a lot of bad press recently but BAE and Unite desmonstrate what can be acheived by having a strong working relationship. The company makes a decent profit and the employees I spoke to felt they were well treated, provided with good pension benefits and the opportunity to work flexibly. It shows that everyone can share in the success of a business and that it pays to treat staff fairly.”
