BuryILD, a family-focused group that supports independent living for adults with learning disabilities within Bury, has celebrated its 20th anniversary.
A special celebration was held at United Reform Church in Bury on 7 November 2014 with special guests including Ivan Lewis MP for Bury South and Councillor Rishi Shori, Deputy Leader of the Council with responsibility for Adults Care Services.
Mr Lewis was responsible for setting up Contact Leisure in 1985 which provided the opportunity for young people with disabilities to socialise in the community. Contact recently merged with Bury ILD.
Mr Lewis said: “It is a remarkable achievement that Bury ILD has reached its 20th year. It is a testament to the strong leadership of the organisation, the tireless effort put in by volunteers and the commitment of service users. It has helped transform the landscape of services provided to people with learning disabilities, and made a real difference.”
David Newns Chair of Bury ILD said “Everyone should be able to lead the fullest life possible. We are proud that the learning disabled people that we support do just that, and that they hugely value their independence. We are always looking to add a few extra service users to give them – and their families – independence and develop their lives“
